How to train your dog to use LickMats correctly

AND HOW TO ENSURE THEY DON'T CHEW THE MATS

LickMats are a fantastic enrichment tool for dogs, but using them correctly is key to making the most of this fun and engaging activity. Here’s how to train your dog to use a LickMat while avoiding unwanted chewing behaviours.

1. Prepare the LickMat

Start by spreading a tasty treat your dog loves onto the surface of the LickMat. A small circle of the treat in the centre works well to begin with. You can experiment with different spreads like peanut butter, yoghurt, or mashed fruits, depending on what your dog enjoys and what’s safe for them to eat. Find spreads here.

2. Set the Scene for Success

Position yourself on the floor with your dog and place the loaded LickMat in front of them. Pay attention to your body language—dogs are sensitive to our movements, and overly looming or intense body language can make them hesitant to interact with the mat. Keep things calm and positive!

3. Redirect if Chewing Occurs

If your dog starts to chew on the edges of the LickMat, gently redirect their attention with a toy or treat. Don’t remove the mat abruptly or punish your dog—simply pick up the LickMat for a moment and try again in 5-10 minutes or at another time. Positive reinforcement works best.

4. Gradual Progress

Once your dog understands how to lick instead of chew, you can gradually spread more of the treat across the LickMat. In the beginning, focus on the centre and avoid the edges to discourage chewing. Over time, as your dog becomes more familiar with the mat, you can offer larger spreads.

5. Clean and Store

Once your dog has finished, pick up the LickMat and clean it. Most LickMats are dishwasher safe, but you can also wash them by hand if you prefer. Keeping the mat clean ensures it remains a safe and enjoyable tool for your dog.

6. Have Fun and Experiment

LickMats are not only great for keeping your dog entertained—they can also be used for training, as a slow feeder, or even as a way to calm an anxious pup. Get creative with the treats you offer and discover which combinations your dog loves most. Just be sure to consult with your vet to ensure the food choices are appropriate for your pet’s diet.

By following these simple steps, you’ll be able to use the LickMat to its full potential, helping your dog enjoy enrichment, mental stimulation, and even healthier feeding habits. Enjoy the process and have fun with your furry friend!
