The World’s First Compostable Dog Toy

MADE FROM SEAWEED

Invented by an environmental scientist the Kelpy Bone is the world’s first totally compostable, plastic-free dog bone. Using Notpla Rigid, a seaweed-based material, it contains no PLA, microplastics, or toxins - just natural ingredients that are safe for your dog and the planet.

Kelpy Bones are made from seaweed, a renewable resource that grows quickly without fertilisers, fresh water, or farmland. Seaweed also helps the planet by capturing carbon at 20 times the rate of land-based forests.

Vet-approved and designed to crumble safely (never splinter), Kelpy Bone provides a satisfying chew that helps clean your dog’s teeth and supports natural enrichment.
Chewing also releases “happy hormones” in dogs, promoting relaxation and mental well-being. Less tough on teeth than harder plastic chews, like Benebones - will accordingly last less long too.

When your dog is done, simply toss the Kelpy Bone into your home compost or garden. It will naturally break down like a banana peel and can even act as a mild fertiliser - leaving no trace behind.

Each bone is made from plants and seaweed, making it a safer, sustainable alternative to plastic toys.

Key Features:

  • Size: 140mm (L) × 60mm (W) × 22mm (H)

Not suitable for strong chewers

Love that it’s an alternative to plastic but unfortunately I did not last any longer than 20 minutes with my dog. My partner bought it and I didn’t realise it wasn’t supposed to be ingested and let her eat the entire thing.

We have found similarly priced alternatives on Amazon that are lasting a similar timeframe to the nyla/benebones for our power-chewer.

With that said, I can imagine this is great for a small dog without a strong jaw,

Thanks so much for the feedback. Certainly agree that these chews last less long than harder plastic chews, like Benebones. The advantage is that they are also less tough on the teeth, but it does make them less suitable for really strong chewers.

I absolutely love these!

My dog is a strong chewer, so they are certainly not lasting as long as his Benebones do, but I am more comfortable with this being a natural product and also feels much safer for his teeth. He is still certainly getting a good chew out of them and I will buy again!

So glad your dog is loving the Kelpy Bones! It’s great to hear you feel confident in them being a natural and safer option for his teeth - that’s exactly what we aim for. Even better that he’s still getting a solid chew out of them!

Ok but messy and softer than expected

It says they aren't really supposed to eat these so watch carefully if your dogs are med-strong chewers. I watched to start and all seemed ok, but i was on a work call for 20 minutes and found they'd both eaten over half and there were lots of wee and medium sized chunks they were hoovering up.
I know both of my dogs apparently have the jaws of an orca, but i think these are probably overpriced, and potentially gimmicky. Who would spend $30 on a chew to watch half of it decompose in their compost bin??
I am getting very cynical about dog products so it could just be me, after all the dogs enjoyed them.

Thank you for such a detailed review. Chews can definitely be hit or miss depending on the dog, and it sounds like your two powered through them and might prefer harder chews, like Benebones. Glad the dogs enjoyed them, even if you were hoping for a longer chewing experience.
