Bonno Chews

Learn more about what makes Bonno so special

Good things take time.
A dog loves a stick. Obviously. A natural instinct. But as it turns out, not all sticks are created equal...

Bonno Chews are handcrafted from ethically sourced Mānuka wood. Each chew is hand-made and finished with New Zealand flaxseed oil. Ready for it to be destroyed.

Bonno is a 100 % natural, strong chew toy.

Bonno proudly sources their Mānuka wood locally in Northland, New Zealand, repurposing wood that was cleared and would be discarded as a by-product of local industries.

They ensure 100% of the Mānuka is used—its bark becomes mulch for landscaping, while sawdust, wood shavings, and off-cuts make perfect fuel for wood-fired pizza ovens, BBQs, and smoking meats, thanks to the strong and unique Mānuka aroma.

Natural and eco-friendly

Bonno is made from natural ingredients. Ethically sourced Mānuka is naturally seasoned before being handcrafted into a Bonno chew and finished with New Zealand Flaxseed Oil.

Fast-growing sustainable Mānuka has been used in New Zealand for centuries, valued for its medicinal qualities, honey and strong wood. Being a resilient pioneer plant that produces countless seeds, Mānuka is one of the first plants to grow after land has been cleared. Within a few years Mānuka establishes if left undisturbed. Land often needs to be cleared of Mānuka for human or other industrial and commercial activities. Being generally clear-felled and destined to be discarded. Bonno's intervention gives a new direction to this otherwise wasted resource.

Flaxseed Oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, and adds shine, strength & flavour to Bonno.

At the end of its life, Bonno can be discarded into your green space to decompose naturally. The recyclable product packaging is made from verified sustainable resources.

Value

Bonno is the long lasting & natural chew. Low in calories, high in fibre, flavoursome and aromatic. Suitable for all dogs. Highly recommended for destructive or bored dogs. The one perfect toy.

Dental and Oral Health

Chewing helps your dog’s dental and oral health. Its mechanical action helps to scrape off plaque and tartar build-up. This can prevent bad breath.

Regular chewing strengthens your dog’s jaw muscles, contributing to overall good dental health.

Bonno can help during teething when young dogs chew to soothe the pain of sore gums and aid the cutting of adult teeth.

Do Bonno chews splinter?

No. Bonno chews are made from Mānuka wood. It is a unique wood. It has tight grains, high density and short fibres, any chewed off fragments or chips are soft.

If you run the chew over the skin of your forearm, you can feel how soft it is. In particular when it has been chewed for some time and has pencil-shaped ends.

When to replace

Regularly inspect your dog's Bonno for signs of wear. Replace it when it's too short to hold, becomes a choking hazard, or if your dog can break off large pieces of the inner wood. Damage like cracking, splitting, or significant wear also means it's time to replace. Since Bonno is made from natural Mānuka wood, exposure to long periods of direct sunlight can cause splitting. Always discard large fragments to ensure safety.

Magical Mānuka

Native to our home New Zealand.
One of the most sustainable woods in the world. One of the rarest woods in the world. One of the hardest woods in the world.

Nestled in the pristine landscapes of New Zealand, the hardy and versatile Mānuka tree stands as a symbol of natural resilience and purity. This remarkable plant, native to New Zealand, blooms with delicate white and pink flowers, creating a stunning display across the countryside.

For centuries, Māori have revered the Mānuka tree for its staggering amount of uses, calling it a taonga or treasure; from food to traditional medicinal uses, and various types of tools and artefacts made from the hard wood.

Infusions made with the tree's leaves were used to treat wounds, reduce inflammation, and promote overall health. The leaves, bark, and oil of the Mānuka tree were traditionally used in remedies for a range of ailments, showcasing the tree’s versatility and importance in natural medicine.

Mānuka plays a crucial role in New Zealand's ecosystems. It is a pioneer plant, colonizing disturbed areas and creating conditions for other native species to follow. Tough and versatile, it thrives from coastlines to high altitudes. Once established, it is even drought-tolerant.

Mānuka produces an enormous amount of seeds; grows, matures and reproduces quickly.

This makes Mānuka a sustainable plant. Some initiatives turned commercial land into Mānuka plantations for carbon capture, while others preserve natural habitats to maintain biodiversity and ecological balance for future generations.
