The Ultimate Dog Belay Belt
MADE TO LAST, MADE IN CHCH
Effortless, Dog-Friendly Walks
With the leash belay, you’ll walk your dog with greater ease, comfort and confidence - without the fear of being pulled over or losing control. This humane walking technique, inspired by rock climbing methods, provides handlers with increased physical control, making walks safer and more enjoyable for both you and your dog. The system helps slow or stop a dog (even one-handed), especially in situations where the handler may have less grip strength, be smaller, injured, or otherwise find it difficult to manage a strong dog. It’s the perfect solution for reducing physical strain during walks.
Training your dog to walk politely on a loose leash can take time. The leash belay allows you to walk your dog safely while they’re still learning, complementing positive reinforcement training. It helps reinforce good behaviour while teaching your dog the skills needed for balanced, enjoyable walks together.
Ideal for those moving away from aversive methods like choke chains or head collars, the leash belay is especially beneficial for individuals with low grip strength, balance issues, or anyone who finds traditional leash walking challenging. Whether you have a strong, excitable dog or just want to reduce strain, this system makes walks with longer lines more accessible.
Leash belaying is a handling skill that shifts friction to mechanical pieces instead of your hands. It isn’t a training method but is designed to work alongside your ongoing positive reinforcement efforts, providing the control you need to keep walks safe and comfortable while continuing to teach your dog.
Important: Always use the leash belay in combination with a well-fitted back-clip harness to ensure your dog’s safety and comfort.
Key Advantages:
- The gentle, non-restrictive design helps prevent pulling without causing discomfort, making it an ideal alternative to harsh training tools.
- The unique belay brake system combined with the extremely comfortable belt makes leash walking easier on your body. You'll no longer have to worry about rope burns or losing your balance when your dog suddenly bolts. Plus, the system allows you to keep one hand free for treats, play or similar.
- The setup helps you and your dog stay safe while giving your dog the freedom to move naturally.
- Whether you have a large, strong dog or a smaller, more excitable one, the leash belay system works with any dog. With this system, you’ll be able to use a longer line confidently, without worrying about losing control or causing injury to yourself or your dog.

- The Full Belay setup is our premium package and the best choice for anyone who wants the complete, most practical leash belay experience. It combines all items:
- Dog Walking Belt: Solid and comfortable dog walking belt made in Christchurch. The belt comes with a removable inner pad and is very size adjustable. With its handy buckle, you'll only need to set the size once and then you are always good to go.
The Treat Pouch attachment makes for the perfect training addition - simply clip treat pouch, poo bag holder, etc. onto it and remove easily when needed. - Screw Gate Carabiner: This 12kN rated carabiner's smaller end works perfectly with our Belay Ring and Belay Rope to allow the rope to slide easily while also allowing the handler to slow or stop it as and where required.
- Belay Ring: This Rigging Ring is the strongest aluminium ring of its size on the market and with its 32kN rating it has the ideal circumference and width to form the perfect friction brake in combination with the other gear provided.
- Belay Rope: This Christchurch made 4m long and 7mm thick Double Braided Polyester Rope with swivel hook carabiner hardly soaks up water, is strong with low stretch and is perfect width for the combination of Belay Ring and Screw Gate Carabiner (smaller end) provided. The Belay Rope comes without a handle to allow for emergency release if needed. You can put a knot on the end of the Belay Line if you wish to remove the emergency release option.
- Docking Leash: When working with a belay setup, you can't safely let go of both hands as the rope can then just be pulled out of the setup. You can prevent a full release by having a knot at the very end of the rope, but that would still allow your dog to run 4m before suddenly hitting the end and you'd likely get pulled over in that process. Therefore we added this 80cm lead made in Christchurch which is perfect for quick control when you need to secure your dog close-by for a short moment. You can clip one end onto your dog when you need both hands free, i.e. to pick up poop or help a reactive dog deal with a trigger passing too close for comfort. We added a ring too, in case you needed to create a handle for a quick transfer. It's not intended for walking the dog as at 80cm it is way too short for that.
- Keyring Carabiner: When not using the belay setup the ring tends to slide down and can easily be lost. This carabiner is a simple 'belay ring parking station', so you don't accidentally lose the ring when not actively using it at the moment. It must absolutely never be used to attach a dog onto it - it's not nearly strong enough for that. But you can absolutely attach poo bags, key chains and similar. While you could theoretically park your ring on the Screw Gate Carabiner you will find that's not a handy option as the smaller end that you are using for belaying does not have the opening facing that direction.
- Dog Walking Belt: Solid and comfortable dog walking belt made in Christchurch. The belt comes with a removable inner pad and is very size adjustable. With its handy buckle, you'll only need to set the size once and then you are always good to go.
- The Basic Belay is a great option for those wanting to experience the benefits of leash belaying without extra accessories. This core belay setup for a basic leash belaying experience includes all of the above, except:
- Docking Leash
- Keyring Carabiner
